
Sherman had a nervous breakdown during the early stages of the Civil War. However, President Lincoln was impressed with Sherman and promoted him to Brigadier General of the volunteers. This discouraged Sherman greatly and made him question his ability to lead his rag tag group of volunteers. He was grazed by a couple of bullets and his regiment was defeated. He was in charge of a group of volunteers and he saw his first combat at the First Battle of Bull Run. William Sherman returned North, where he was assigned Colonel of the 13th Infantry regiment. They are not going to let this country be destroyed without a mighty effort to save it… If your people will but stop and think, they must see in the end that you will surely fail.” They are a peaceable people but an earnest people, and they will fight, too. War is a terrible thing! You mistake, too, the people of the North. It is all folly, madness, a crime against civilization! You people speak so lightly of war you don’t know what you’re talking about. This country will be drenched in blood, and God only knows how it will end. “You people of the South don’t know what you are doing. Before the Civil War had started, events such as South Carolina’s secession, Sherman gave this warning to the people of the South: Sherman was bouncing around with failed jobs until he finally got a job at Louisiana State Academy. After his resignation, Sherman married Thomas Ewing’s daughter, Eleanor Boyle Ewing. However, he was not assigned to combat missions which caused him to resign his position after being promoted to the rank of Captain. After graduating, Sherman received the rank of Second Lieutenant of the 3rd U.S.

He excelled in subjects like mathematics, chemistry, philosophy and drawing. At the academy, Sherman was one of the most popular and brightest students. Sherman’s adoptive family helped enlist him as a cadet in the United States Military Academy at West Point. Young William would stay in Ohio until the age of 16. He was then adopted by a family friend, Thomas Ewing.

His father died while William was only 9 years old. For the most part of his childhood, Sherman was raised in Lancaster, Ohio along with ten other siblings. He also wrote “Memoirs” which provided a first hand view on the Civil War.Ĭharles Robert Sherman and Mary Hoyt Sherman gave birth to William Tecumseh Sherman on Februrary 8th, 1820. His efforts in the Civil War earned him the title of Commanding General of the United States.


General Sherman is known for his military genius and also his ruthless strategy against his enemies. The stern and bold man portrayed above is none other than William Tecumseh Sherman. Liddell Hart famously declared that Sherman was “the first modern general”.
